Temple dreamers throughout the generations

Benjamin Zeev Herzl
They arrived at the entrance to the Temple. The Temple was rebuilt because the time had come . It was built as in the old days, of ashlars quarried in the local quarries and hardened in the fresh air. Once again the pillars, cast in copper, stood before the Holy of Holies of Israel. The left pillar was called Boaz and the right one – Jachin. In the front courtyard stood a mighty altar made of copper and the wide water basin known as the ‘Brass Sea’, as in those distant days, when King Solomon ruled the land.

King David
"I rejoiced when they said to me, 'We will go to the house of the Lord.' Our feet stood within your gates, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem built as a city that is joined together."
(Psalms 122)
"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, we wept, when we remembered Zion... If I forget you, O Jerusalem, my right hand will forget you: let my tongue cleave to my cheek if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above the head of my joy." (Psalm 137)

David Ben-Gurion
The rebirth of Jerusalem in our distant past, during the period of our national uprising, as the political and spiritual center of the people and a symbol of its uniqueness and historical destiny; the precious relics from the great past that stand in this city; the engraving of the holy and revered name of Jerusalem in the heart of the nation that went into exile and the oath of allegiance to our Holy City that generation after generation repeated, in all its wanderings, over the rivers of Babylon more than two thousand years ago and until today, on all the rivers in the world; the constant attempts throughout the days of exile to return to this city despite all the hardships and troubles that befell the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the conquest of the Romans to the rule of the Turks; the Jewish settlement rooted in this city for several generations – all of these have made Jerusalem the focal point of the love, longing, aspirations and hope of the Jewish people.

Rabbi Kook
"השאיפה למהירות הבנין נותנת מעוף של קדושה מברקת בנשמתנו. והשקיקה, שהמהירות הזאת תהיה בימינו, מקשרת את כל מהות החיים שלנו, גם בצורתם הזמנית, ליסוד הקדושה השלמה העליונה, שכל הארץ תאיר והאירה מכבודה, שיבנה בית המקדש במהרה בימינו".

Maimonides
"It is a commandment to build a house for the Lord, ready to be offered in it, and to celebrate it three times a year, as it is said, 'And make me a sanctuary.'"
(Laws of the House of Choice Chapter 1)

Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalisher
"And now why do we hesitate? How long will we not have mercy on Jerusalem? How long will we not make it our home? How long will we think that with the heart's desire and with a desire empty of action alone, we will fly to the mountain (to the Temple)? Not so, my brother! But with your mouth and your heart to do it! Everything is according to the majority of the action... because thought without action – is like a soul without a body."

רבי יהודה הלוי
He who inspires love for this holy place in the hearts of men is also undoubtedly worthy of reward and is among those who will bring about the coming of our hope, as it is said: "You will arise and have mercy on Zion, for it is time to be gracious, for the time has come, for your servants have desired its stones and its dust.'" This means: Jerusalem will not be built unless the children of Israel yearn for it with such a desire that they will have mercy on its stones and dust.

The 'True Language'
"Here it is written, 'From everyone whose heart stirs up'. For this commandment is upon every man of Israel. ... That at any time the children of Israel may have a willing heart. With this they may be able to rise up and build the temple of the Lord ... that through the generosity of their hearts they may be able to continue the inspiration of the Shekhinah in the work of their hands ."

Our feet stand at your gates, Jerusalem... with our lives in our blood,

The religion of the Jewish people is not a religion like all religions. It is not just a belief, but the entire perception of Judaism. If there is no religion, there is no Judaism, and we do not come to redeem only ourselves. Anyone who is unable to understand the value of religion, even for Israeli nationalism, will end up straying from the path and should not be believed in. All the heroes of the nation were people who believed in complete and innocent faith with the help of God Almighty... This is the reason why I refused to give up the Temple section in 'Principles of the Resurrection' ...

The Ramchal
"And if a man says, 'Who am I and what am I that I should pray for the exile and for Jerusalem, etc.? Because of my prayer, the exiles will enter and salvation will flourish?' His answer is on the side, as we have read (Sanhedrin 38): Therefore, a single man was created so that everyone could say, 'The world was created for me,' and he is already pleased with his spirit, blessed be he, that his sons would ask and pray for this... and God, blessed be He, is pleased with this."
